Just some cheeky (haa) colon health humor in honor of Colon Cancer Awareness month!
WAIT – don’t stop reading just because we’re talking about a devastating, life-threatening but preventable disease that 1 in 19 people will be diagnosed with in their lifetime! There are yummy recipes below AND more (that are, to be honest, probably even yummier) available tonight at the Chris4Life Eat4Life fundraiser at Crios.
I was lucky enough to be offered every dietitian’s secret dream: to give real chefs a list of foods they should cook with, and have them compete against each other to make something that’s not only delicious, but healthy! And in this case, good for colon health in particular.
Over the past few weeks, I’ve worked with and gotten to know some of the amazing people who volunteer for Chris4Life to get this event off the ground, and I have to say I am VERY excited for tonight – $50 gets you drinks, a taste of the competing dishes from 4 local, big name chefs, hors d’oeurves, and a fabulous evening. Fascinating that spices might have anti-cancer properties, right? Turmeric has been shown to “inhibit the proliferation and the post-irradiation clonogenic survival of multiple colorectal cancer cell lines” – in plain English, it stopped cancer cells from re-growing when used after radiation in a test tube, and in rat models was shown to boost the efficacy of other cancer drugs.

Good, because here are my recipes for a colon-friendly meal that are as mind-blowingly tasty as they are inexpensive. Just add a bed of quinoa for the salmon cakes, and you’re on your way to a beautiful, nutrient-rich dinner fit for guests!
